Sulgrave Manor is committed to providing inspiring educational experiences. Our programs are designed to cater for young learners, making history and nature accessible and exciting. We engage students across different age groups, offering unique opportunities to explore history through immersive, interactive experiences. By combining historical exploration with hands-on activities and personal reflections, we aim to ignite a lifelong passion for learning and discovery in every child who visits.
Our site is safe and secure, and we allow only one school on site at any one time.
Key Stage 1
Living Long Ago
Travel back in time and discover how our lives today compare to living long ago. Learn what life was like in Tudor England by exploring the historic manor, handling replica objects, and playing with Tudor toys and games. This session helps young learners understand the differences and similarities between past and present lifestyles. Children will:
- Explore the rooms of Sulgrave Manor to see where the Washington family lived and worked
- Handle and examine replica objects such as Tudor clothing, household items, and tools
- Participate in traditional Tudor games and activities, offering a fun and engaging way to learn about history
- Discuss and compare modern life with life in Tudor times, fostering critical thinking and historical empathy
Bugs and Buds
Discover the hidden world of mini-beasts and explore the parts of plants in Sulgrave Manor’s gardens. Using different tools and techniques, students will learn more about habitats in our gardens and plant their own seed to take back to school and watch grow. This program encourages curiosity about the natural world and teaches basic biology concepts. Activities include:
- Guided garden tours to identify and learn about various insects and plants.
- Hands-on activities using magnifying glasses and other tools to study mini-beasts in their natural habitats.
- Interactive lessons on the life cycles of plants and insects.
- Seed planting activity where each child plants a seed to nurture and observe its growth back at school.
Key Stage 2
Rich and Poor
What was it like to live at Sulgrave Manor during the sixteenth century? This session explores the social dynamics and daily life of the Washington family and their servants. Students will investigate how life differed for the rich and the poor through exploration of the manor and the use of replica objects. Key learning experiences include:
- A detailed tour of parts of the manor, with discussion on how rooms and objects would have been used
- Examination of replica objects, including furniture, tools, and clothing, to understand daily life during Tudor times
- Discuss and compare social roles in Tudor England, fostering critical thinking and historical empathy
Bugs and Buds
Explore the hidden world of creepy crawlies and the wonderful world of flowers in Sulgrave Manor’s gardens. Using different tools and techniques, students will learn more about the plants and mini-beasts in our gardens and plant their own seed to take back to school and watch grow. This program builds on Key Stage 1 concepts, offering deeper insights into biology and ecology. Activities include:
- Experiments and observations using microscopes and other scientific tools to study plant and insect life.
- Interactive lessons on the life cycles of plants and insects.
- A seed planting activity with discussions on plant care, growth, and the environmental factors affecting plants.
